Remembering Margaret Reid Martin

A few years back, I was asked to write a song to celebrate the 50th anniversary of women’s ordination within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. As a result, ‘Mothers of Faith’ emerged.

The story behind the song can be  read more fully here.

On Monday, the Very Rev Margaret Reid Martin, the first woman ordained into ministry in the PCANZ in 1965 passed away. She was a pioneer. You can read something of her story here.

You can hear the song below. We give thanks for Margaret’s life, witness and ministry, and offer our thoughts and prayers to her family at this time.

The music for the song can be downloaded here: Mothers of Faith LS

Margaret was my most respected New Zealand woman. Her wise counsel when I was considering if I was fit enough to train as a Lay Preacher – invaluable.

Another connection – that she was working at the Waikaremoana Maori Mission and living in the old Mission House. It was so good to listen to her memories of that time.

From time to time I met her at Sea of Faith gatherings and when she took a service at Epsom Presbyterian Church.

In loving and respected memory – Beverley Smith
